Summer Fun Calendar

Now that school is out (at least for the boys and me; Jim has another week) we have our summer fun calendar hanging in the kitchen. I took a calendar that I had gotten as a freebie in the mail and turned to the months of June and July. I then collected the schedules of free activities that are going on in our area this summer and began writing the events on the calendar. Most of the events are at our local libraries as part of their summer reading programs. We are blessed to be able to access 4 libraries, all with many activities going on this summer. There are crafts, puppets, story times, magicians, music groups, storytellers, live animal shows, family movoes, and much more. I go ahead and write all of the events we might be interested in even though I know we will not be attended all of them. This gives the boys something to look forward to each week when there is a particular activity they really want to see. It also gives Jim some options for something fun to do with the boys on days that I have to work.
In addition to the library events there are other community events that we add to our calendar. The ampitheater in Lincoln State Park is holdin free movie nights this summer. For the $5 gate fee to get into the park we can go watch a film on a large screen in a beautiful outdoor ampitheater. We could make a longer outing of it by going early to hike the trails and have a picnic supper before the movie starts. A local movie theater usually has free family movies on Wednesday morningd throughout the summer. This is a great way to catch some fairly recent movies without having to pay the high cost of a movie ticket.
There are also other parks and nature trails in our area that hold free or low cost events. The local baseball team, the Dubois County Bombers usually has a fan appreciation night with free admission at least once each season. Seth and Caleb also usually earn free tickets to a Bombers game through one of the summer library programs. There are many small community festivals in the area all summer long. By watching the communtiy billboard section of our local newspaper we will find all kinds of events to add to our summer fun calendar. It is a lot of fun to have plenty of free or low cost options on days when we would like something special to do together. Seth and Caleb enjoy looking at the calendar and picking out the activities they are most interested in.
